Tennis
Tennis has been a constant thread throughout my life — a sport I’ve played, coached, and competed in over many years.
While at university, I spent several summers in the United States coaching at children’s camps and country clubs, and qualified as an LTA coach. I captained the university team in my final year and played in two consecutive UAU national finals — both times finishing as runners-up to Loughborough, who were in a class of their own.
In 1992, during my time in the RAF, I competed in the RAF Championships, with the finals held at the All England Club, Wimbledon — an experience that remains a highlight and a fond memory.
Since moving to Cyprus, I’ve had the opportunity to return to tennis with renewed energy. I live next to what is arguably the best club on the island, with excellent courts, outstanding coaches, and a depth of playing talent that easily exceeds that of the London clubs I belonged to in the past. There is no shortage of quality opposition, and the standard of competition is consistently high.
I now compete regularly on the ITF Masters circuit, which combines a good level of play with a friendly, international community. Over the past two years, I’ve entered around twenty tournaments, with a number of wins and runner-up finishes. Highlights have included matches against several top-10 players, former ATP professionals/Davis Cup players, and a former world No.1.

My ITF Masters ranking peaked in 2025 at #23 in Mixed Doubles and #58 in Mens Doubles. I’ve stepped back from singles — the knees have made their view clear — but still enjoy the challenge and camaraderie of competitive doubles.
None of it would have been nearly as rewarding without my excellent partners — Vasily, Steve, Guido, Paris, Beverly, and Jane — whose skill and good humour make the sport such a pleasure.
To the right are some of the trophies I picked up this last year or so. If you hover over them it will tell you the tournament and my partner's name.
